Osaka has long been a “city of the sea.”
The current Osaka Bay extended further inland in ancient times, functioning as a port city. Around the 4th to 7th centuries, when it was known as Naniwa-tsu, it served as a hub for Japan’s international exchange, a starting point for diplomatic and cultural exchange with China (Sui 隋 and Tang 唐 dynasties) through Japanese envoys to these dynasties.
Meanwhile, during this period, Osaka was a gateway for Buddhism, the Ritsuryo 律令 legal system, and technology from China and the Korean Peninsula. Japan has refined the politics, religion, culture, and art brought from other Asian countries in its own unique way, leading to its present state.
Currently, the number of Asian students studying art in Japan is steadily increasing. So-called “Japanese painting” originally involved techniques introduced from China. The fact that Chinese students are now studying these techniques, which had died out in China, reflects a significant shift in the times. While some Asian students return to their home countries, many remain in Japan and are active as artists.
We believe there is great importance in exhibiting and selling artworks by artists who consider Asia their homeland and are active in Japan, together with works by Japanese domestic artists, particularly in Osaka, a hub connecting Asia and Japan in politics, economics, cultures and arts.
We sincerely ask for your support for this exhibition and for the exhibiting artists.
